American Apparel Says It Might Not Have Enough Money to Last the Year
Between sinking sales and mounting legal fees, you might wonder how American Apparel
has enough money to operate an international business. On Monday, the
company provided a response to that question: it might not.
Uniqlo Had a Sluggish Spring in the U.S.
With its fleet of stores now numbering 814 in Japan and 767 more internationally, the low-priced basics brand Uniqlo
led parent company Fast Retailing's revenue to grow 24 percent in the
first nine months of the year. Although unusually cold weather put a
damper on sales during June, Uniqlo Japan saw same store sales rise
nearly 10 percent in the third quarter, which ran from March to May 31 —
and the brand was even stronger in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan
and South Korea, which all beat their sales estimates.
Did Michael Kors Knock Off Shrimps's Recognizable Striped Coat?
It's
often said that there's no such thing as an original idea anymore — in
fashion or otherwise — and some weeks, that rings especially true. On
Tuesday, for instance, Skechers filed a lawsuit against Steve Madden that claims the latter footwear brand knocked off Skechers's patented "Go Walk" sneakers.
Meet the New Multi-Step Mascara Regimen
It's
no secret that makeup has become very specialized lately, and with
specialization comes multiple steps. People think nothing of using six
products to contour or slathering on 12 products in a Korean-inspired skin care regimen. Now this "more is more" philosophy is moving up to the eyes, and more specifically, to lashes.
16 Must-See Beauty Looks from the Fall 2015 Couture Shows
Couture is the best. After seasons of tasteful, subtle hair and
makeup at ready-to-wear runway shows, it's a relief to see completely
over-the-top looks for a change, if for no other reason than I don't
have to think of synonyms for "glowy" and "natural" to describe them.
Designers went all the way with hair and makeup for the fall 2015
couture shows, and it was dreamy and thought-provoking.
Madewell to Reprise Its Collaboration With Sézane Just in Time for Bastille Day
Last
fall, perennial cool-girl retail chain Madewell partnered up with
French label Sézane — which has a similarly hip cult following — on a
14-piece collaboration that perfectly captured the particular brand of
French insouciance that so many fashion lovers are fond of.
Bright Colors and Bold Patterns Spotted Outside the Paris Couture Shows
There was a motley crew of colors and patterns outside the haute couture shows in Paris this week, and we aren't just talking about the anti-fur protestors. Of the many fashion weeks that have already happened this year — from women's ready-to-wear to men's — couture is undeniably the fanciest, and as such, fashion's insiders dressed to the nines.
Alyssa's Chic, Convertible Shirt Dress
Often
times, it seems that no one can style a piece of clothing quite like
the man or woman who designed it. Case in point: when I dropped by Carin
Rodebjer's resort preview last month — where the native Swede walked
editors through her collection — I couldn't help but obsess over the
shirtdress she was wearing. More specifically, how she was wearing it.

Uniqlo outfits 'stylish' hijabs, dresses for the modern and modest women
Clothing retailer Uniqlo has teamed up with a UK-based fashion designer to launch a new “modest wear” collection, including a range of hijabs.
The range, designed by Hana Tajima, features stylish hijabs in a variety of colours and prints, headbands, long dresses and rayon blouses which aims to “cater to ladies who embrace modest fashion” as well as being “carefully designed to suit contemporary tastes”. The items will go on sale on Friday from the store’s website and outlet in Singapore.
Amazon has completely changed its fashion strategy
Amazon has changed its mind about being a luxury retailer.
The massive e-commerce company is saying it no longer is focusing on courting luxury brands, Jennie Perry, chief marketing officer of Amazon's fashion division, told Business of Fashion.
"There has been lot of speculation on us entering the luxury market and that is just not something that we’re focused on right now," Perry said.
Kiernan Shipka Shows Us There's More to Summer Than White Dresses
In my fantasy future for Sally Draper, the character Kiernan Shipka played on "Mad Men"
until the show wrapped forever last month, she goes to interesting
parties and always looks like the coolest girl in the room. Which pretty
much describes Shipka's life currently.

Up-and-Coming American Models to Watch
While
the models you see in ad campaigns and runway shows come from all
corners of the globe, some of the most famous supermodels in the world
were born and raised in the USA. Women like Cindy Crawford, Stephanie
Seymour, Christy Turlington Burns and Carolyn Murphy were discovered as
young women growing up in relatively small towns, and although they've
reached the pinnacle of industry success over the years, they had humble
beginnings (and less-than-ideal bookings), just like many other models trying to break into the business.
4 'New' Beauty Trends That Are Actually Old Techniques With Different Names
Certain trends in fashion and beauty are recycled every generation or so, like A-line miniskirts, flared jeans and the cat eye. Movie remakes are common, too. (And I would argue sometimes completely unnecessary.

From Startups to Mass Retailers, It's a Tough Time for Fashion
I
went out to eat on Saturday night, my third visit to a restaurant that
opened about six months ago. I initially booked a reservation there
because I’m attracted to novelty. It’s in a popular neighborhood, but
more than a few blocks away from the cliché parts, and its chef has
worked at some very hip eateries. The menu, from the raw bar to the
cocktails, is appealing. The proprietors have also done a good job with
branding: nice logo, beautiful interiors, inventive cocktail names.
6 Standout Shows from London Collections: Men
Those
who have been in the fashion game long enough will remember when
LC:M was just a day tacked on the back of London Fashion Week. Today,
LC:M, short for London Collections Men, has its own four-day event,
which has underscored what many people concede to be fashion canonical
law: There is no men's style like London men's style.
For Young Designers, Private Clients Can Be the Start of a Real Business
Earlier this month, Honor designer Giovanna Randall announced that she would stop producing her ready-to-wear collection — for the time being, at least — to focus on “special orders and bridal.”
It’s
not entirely surprising. Honor was well funded.

An Eyeliner Trick You Have to Use for Your Office Holiday Party
Office holiday parties can cause a little bit of a makeup freak-out. You want to look special but not crazy or over-the-top—a.k.a. water-cooler fodder. Which is why this eyeliner style Sienna Miller wore to the American Sniper premiere last night is perfect.

How "Wall Scouting" Became a Thing in the Fashion World
It's a running joke in the Fashionista office that "wall scouting" has become one of the biggest time sucks for fashion bloggers and editors who want that little
something extra to make their Instagram posts stand out. While it's a
no-brainer that a hand-painted mural that's dozens of feet tall is a
more eye-catching backdrop than an apartment wall, we can't help but
wonder what lengths folks will go to in order to get a shot.
Today Is Probably the Day That You Will Buy a Bathing Suit
If you’ve been procrastinating on that summer swimsuit purchase, you must not delay any longer. No, really. After today, the pickings are bound to be much slimmer. Lyst,

“most popular day of the year to buy swimwear online,” based on search

Ukrainian Designers Press On in Wartime
Even in the shadow of war, the fashion show goes on. As Ukraine
remained in crisis this week, with a cease-fire weakening, Ukrainians in
Kiev were doing their best to proceed with business.
Kiev’s fashion week—three days of shows sponsored by Mercedes-Benz—hit the runways over the weekend. The event showcased a group of designers determined to carry on despite sewing machines that might run only two hours a day amid electricity shortages, difficulty importing fabric and fears among business contacts outside the country.

devices including our smartphones. On Friday, Google announced that it
has a partner to help bring the textile to market: Levi's.

forward, all nail salons in New York will be required to post the

Is it Even Possible to Look Classy at the Beach?
Contrary to popular belief, looking classy at the beach isn't hard. Trade in your teeny bikini for a figure-flattering one piece, ditch the baseball cap and choose a floppy straw hat, and voilà! If you want to go the extra mile, oversize tortoiseshell sunglasses never hurt anyone.
Business Louis Vuitton Ranked World's Most Valuable Luxury Brand
In the luxury world, the top dogs are exactly who you might expect them to be. According to a new ranking from the research group Millward Brown and the advertising conglomerate WPP, Louis Vuitton

worth an estimate $24.7 billion, making it the most valuable brand in
the sector.
The Best Daytime Looks at Cannes
I'd be curious to know just how many gowns were flown into Cannes for its annual film festival. With its many premieres and galas, the number must be greater those brought in for any other event series.
But
it's the stars' daytime looks — typically worn to photocalls for the
films they're promoting — that always prove the most varied, and thus
interesting.
Sephora Goes Straight for Chinese Consumers With New Online Flagship

How to Get Megan Draper's '60s Hair from 'Mad Men'
The
seven seasons of "Mad Men" span almost exactly a decade, from March
1960 to sometime in 1970. It was a decade that saw a great deal of
change in fashion — from shortening hemlines to the total disappearance
of men's hats — as well as in hair and beauty. This is best captured in
Megan Draper's shift from a carefully arranged bob to a large, Priscilla Presley-inspired bouffant with cascading curls, which she begins wearing after she moves to California and her marriage to Don Draper enters its final stages.
How to Add Sun Protection When You're Already Wearing Makeup
You've probably read enough sunscreen articles
at this point to know that most dermatologists recommend reapplying it
every two hours. While this generally applies to situations when you're
outside and being active/getting wet/sweating/in direct sunlight, it's
also ideal to touch up your sunscreen on a normal work day, too. Its key
chemicals can break down over the course of the day and become less
effective, and it's in your face's best interest to reapply at least
once on non-beach days.

Models thatCame Out for the Amfar Gala in Cannes
As I type this, all of the best looking people on the planet (at least in my humble opinion) are gathered together at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, where the Amfar Cinema Against AIDS Gala is taking place. Thanks to Carine Roitfeld, who's staging a black and white-themed fashion show for the occasion, models like Karlie Kloss, Adriana Lima, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner traveled to Cannes with their best black tie ensembles in tow, and the one of a kind looks that come down the runway will be auctioned off to raise money for the cause. The 2014 edition of the Amfar Gala raised a record-breaking $35 million for AIDS research, and if the showing on this year's red carpet is any indication, we're thinking Roitfeld and her stunning model entourage might have what it takes to surpass it.
Eliza's Love Letter of a Perfume
On
a gorgeous afternoon a few weeks ago, I met up with Jan Ahlgren, the
creator of the luxury perfume brand Vilhelm Parfumerie, to learn about
his young business. He brought with him his wife and collaborator,
Polly, who is currently finishing up law school and is, not so
incidentally, the inspiration for the brand's flagship fragrance, Dear
Polly. It is, in essence and intention, a love letter.
Maddie Ziegler Takes Her Rightful Place as Capezio's Brand Ambassador
After starring in numerous hit music videos for the pop singer Sia, shooting editorials for magazines like Dazed and serving as a fashion week correspondent for Elle, Maddie Ziegler has finally landed the industry gig she was always meant to have: brand ambassador for the dance wear company Capezio.
Maybe
you, like me, haven't thought about Capezio since you took jazz class
in the fifth grade. But thanks to the Ziegs and her strange
gravitational pull, it's suddenly on your radar again. You discover they
also carry an "activewear" line, and even though a former employer once
told you at a party to "Stop dancing, you're terrible at that," you
look into it, because, hey, you work out. Maybe you even wind up buying
something.
That's celebrity marketing in action.
Capezio
announced the happy news on Instagram, and Ziegler looks predictably
cute in her first campaign images. While the clothes and Ziegler's
movement take center stage, we'd like to give a big shoutout to the hair
team. That messy bun trying to wrestle itself to freedom is truly
fantastic.

News Brief: Tavi Snaps Back at The Sartorialist, What David Letterman Has Done for Fashion
Tavi snaps back at The Sartorialist
The always frank Tavi Gevinson made her name as a fashion wunderkind at the very young age of 13. In an interview on The Talks, the now 19-year-old discusses the success of Rookie and grudgingly being a role model for young girls. On the topic of Scott Schuman of the Sartorialist and the comments he's made about her immaturity in the past, Tavi minces no words, saying it stems from his own insecurity and “the fact that he’s shorter than [her] in real life.” Oh, snap. {The Talks}

Hollywood's view of Chinese fashion
Hollywood has long been fascinated with China. But that doesn't mean it has always represented it fully or accurately — far from it.
In the new exhibit "China: Through the Looking Glass," early Hollywood — and film in general — is just one of the lenses through which the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute explores the way Chinese art and aesthetics have been interpreted by the West over the years.
Another, naturally, is fashion — and the show boasts a massive 30,000 square feet of gallery space filled with rich ensembles: Chinese costumes, historic garments and decorative arts, displayed beside the work of dozens of Western designers who were inspired by China.
The exhibition runs through Aug. 16 in New York City.
A nail biting finish: how I finally stopped biting my nails
This might sound impossibly lame, but I have never cut my fingernails and if someone gave me a nail clipper, I would probably leave myself with ten raw stumps for fingers. I have been biting my nails for literally as long as I can remember, so it’s no exaggeration to say that stopping is tackling the habit of a lifetime.
I know that being a nail biter is unusual, but I never really thought about why I did it, what it meant, or how to stop. Now that I think about it, that’s strange, because I’m a psychologist and this kind of this is exactly what I am interested in – in other people.

5 Tips for Rocking Short Hair Like You Mean It
The first time I cut my hair short, I was thirteen-years-old. I chopped over a foot of hair and donated it in honor of my sister, who had passed away from cancer the previous year. Cutting my hair was one of my earliest brushes with feminism, and one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done (try being the only kid in your freshman class with a pixie cut, much to your new boyfriend’s dismay.) In the past fifteen years, I have had just about every short hairstyle imaginable, from shoulder-length long bobs (or “lobs” as Pinterest would have it) to super short side-shaves and faux hawks. Some styles were more successful than others (pixie cuts should never be feathered y’all), but suffice to say, I think I’ve finally nailed this thing down.
