In an attempt to reach the scale of its American counterparts — the CFDA Awards and the Met Gala — and appeal to an international audience, the British Fashion Awards recently rebranded to become The Fashion Awards, and on Tuesday, British Fashion Council Chairman
Natalie Massenet announced the nominees for the 2016 edition of the event, which will take place on Dec. 5. The ceremony will be held at London's renowned Royal Albert Hall, and the guest list is expected to reach a whopping 4,000 attendees — including industry insiders and members of the public who purchased tickets. (The event will double as the first annual fund-raiser gala for the BFC Education Foundation, which supports future design talent.)
The short-list of nominees for each of the nine categories were voted on by 1,500 members of the fashion industry from 41 different countries, including editors, buyers, those from PR, photographers and more. British talent is widely represented, ranging from up-and-comers like Molly Goddard, Grace Wales Bonner and Faustine Steinmetz, to established names like Christopher Kane, Sarah Burton and Stella McCartney. Other interesting observations from the nominees list include the fact that both Gigi and Bella Hadid are up for the honor of International Model of the Year, meaning they'll go head-to-head at the awards ceremony, and that "Urban Luxury Brands" — Vetements, Palace, Off-White — are granted their very own category, further proving that streetwear-inspired collections are likely here for the long haul.
Additional awards will be announced leading up to the event, including one that celebrates the industry's "Creative Influencers." Watch this space, and read the full list of nominees below.
